From collection Candidates
Katherine L. Craig sought election as the State Superintendent of Instruction for Colorado first in 1904 as the Republican Party candidate. She won over incumbant Helen Grenfell. She was re-elected by a wide margin in 1906, She ran again in 1908 but was narrowly defeated by the Democratic candidate, Katherine Cook, some people think because of their similar names. In 1910 she was discussed as a possible candidate for the mayor of Denver. In 1914 Craig again campaigned for the state superintendent of public instruction position but was defeated by Mary C.C. Bradford. Craig finally defeated Bradford in 1920. She and Bradford and then Inez Lewis campaigned against one another for the position throughout the 1920s. Craig won in 1926 and 1928. While superintendent Craig wrote a number of textbooks. She served as vice president of the National Education Association and was a member of several service clubs. Craig was a university graduate. In her career she taught literature in the Denver public schools and, briefly, in Salt Lake City. She never married.
